I’ve been a work from home consultant for over three years now. I really enjoy working from home, but it can be a challenging to stay focused and on task. Here are some of my tips.

  1. Designate one area of your house as “your office”. This is where work happens and nothing else, at least during the work day. It’s easy to not be able to turn off your work brain at the end of the day because you’re in your same house all day. If you set boundaries you know that when you cross to another room you’re no long “at work”.
  2. Take breaks. Take a quick walk around the block. Get up and move around, do some stretches. Don’t eat lunch at your desk. You need to give not only your body a rest but your brain as well. Don’t just sit in your chair all day.
  3. Invest in a good chair! If you’re going to be working at home for a long time don’t sacrifice your back to a chair you bought on sale at IKEA. You will be sitting in that chair all day and you need something that is going to support you. You don’t need a $1200 chair, but there are some good $250-$600 chairs out there that are well worth that money. Your back and your butt will thank you.
  4. Don’t forget to claim it with the IRS, because your office space can be used as a way lower your adjusted gross income. Ask your CPA or be sure to follow the questionnaire if you do your taxes yourself.
